Blog Post #12

Unforgettable Memories

Here is my assignment that I think should have been in the blog post assignments. I think it's so important to have "fun" in the classroom but also learning at the same time. I think all this technology 24/7 is a lot to learn but also, I like to learn by seeing things in real life, and hands on. Have memorable moments and unforgettable teachers who teach you how to have a good time when learning.

The video you need to watch is "How To Be An Amazing Teacher"
Next, write a paragraph on any memorable moments you've had during your school years and how they were unforgettable.

My unforgettable moment was in high school. I had a Sociology class and my teacher was Coach Hardcastle. He was amazing and all of his talks had such great morals to remember and live by. He always had a personal experience that went along with it. I will never forget him!

PART 2: Here is another Blog Post you can assign. It is an actual lesson for 2nd graders that I will use in my classroom and modify it according to grade level.

Author Study on Eric Carle (or let them choose an author of children books)

*Find a biography about the author and post links to them in your blog. (video, text, pictures, etc)
*List 5-10 books from the author on your blog.
*Make a book trailer on ONE of the books and post on the class blog so everyone can see it.

The Completed Lesson by Me:

Eric Carle Websites: "About Eric Carle"
"The Official Eric Carle Website"

Books by Eric Carle:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Are You My Mother?
Brown Bear, Brown Bear
The Grouchy Ladybug
Pancakes, Pancakes
The Very Busy Spider
Animals, Animals
The Secret Birthday Message
The Tiny Seed
The Mixed Up Chameleon
1,2,3 to the Zoo
Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?

  1. Courtney,
I really enjoyed your assignment! Steve Spangler's "How to Be an Amazing Teacher" was a great video and I think it shows that even while technology is great, there are certain qualities a teacher must possess and certain experiences they should encourage. Just imagine the "discovery and exploration" students could uncover with more technology, though! A teacher like Steve Spangler who knows how to make learning fun with small, ordinary objects could probably do even more engaging activities with all the products and services provided by technology!
Also, I liked your segment that you wrote but I would have liked to have heard more. What exactly made his class so memorable? What kind of talks did he have? Would you like to be like this teacher? As I was reading, I thought it needed a little more explanation.
Overall, good job! Well-written, creative, engaging! And FANTASTIC job on the Book Trailer. I loved this book as a kid!

  2. Thank you so much Carly! That makes me smile! Coach Hardcastle would tell us stories about love, relationships and just life in general. He used to talk about his daughter and son and all about how when they were growing up he could see that certain relationships wouldn't last and he would give them advice about everything. He just had a lot to say about relationships and how not to live with your boyfriend before getting married, and how love may not last forever but some "things" will if you know what I mean. He was very blunt about things in that area. I would love to teach like him. Even though it was mostly lectures, he always had a great ending to his stories and made them worth listening to. Hope that explains it a little more. I can't remember every story but they were fun to listen to!

  3. Hey Courtney! Let me start by saying that I love your first picture of the thinking cloud with the words "unforgettable memories". I completely agree with the idea of having fun while you're learning. I plan to use the SmartBoard and blogging as ways to engage my students in learning as well as having fun!

I was blessed with one of those coach teachers as well. Always full of life, stories, and lessons to be learned. Like you, I will never forget some of the values (and actual knowledge) I learned from them.

Your lesson plan is a perfect way to integrate children into full use of technology while keeping their attention. Since you said you would adjust according to grade level, I would suggest putting the younger ones into groups, this way they can learn social skills, team work, etc. Kill two birds with one stone kinda project :)

Your post itself was on target and well written. he book trailers were so much fun to do for me and I'm 28! LOL I really stepped back into my memories from childhood while choosing a book. Unfortunately, there were not as many picture stills from the book online as I hoped, but I made it work. Good luck with the remainder of EDM!!!

  4. Courtney,
He sounds like a very interesting teacher! I am glad you have a teacher that you would like to emulate :)
I like Mary's idea of incorporating students into groups! I can remember when I was a kid we got to pick the name of our group and I was outspoken and bossy so ours was named Team Pocahontas. Bailey's idea is to separate her class into the separate houses from Harry Potter, which I think is perfect! I also saw a blog where the teacher had links to a separate page for each group so the students could post their group work and communicate. I can't remember what age but I think it was middle school, which is an age where there is a lot of drama and kids really need to focus on sharing and getting along. Am I right?
I am glad you both enjoyed the Book Trailers, I personally like them a lot, being an English nerd and what not! Sometimes it is difficult to get kids to read, and the cover just doesn't do a book justice! Book Trailers are needed to entice them to want to read a book to see what happens.
Hang in there! You are almost done :)
